Abstract

The Brazilian Tax Law has large debt to Rui Barbosa, a prominent figure on the national scene from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, and bequeathed important contributions to the positive tax law. Therefore, this study intends to recall the historical aspects of tax
law during the early years of consolidation of the Old Republic, and specifically, to explore a bit of Rui Barbosa contribution to the development of the Brazilian tax law.
